🖐 Releasing the grip
Yoga tonight in Clinton Hill and this Saturday in Greenpoint
I’m sure I’m not the only person who gets a little anxious when preparing to work with someone new. Maybe you’re a big fan of their work or have been following them on socials. Maybe you’ve heard things about them on the grapevine or made assumptions in your head about how the day will go. And then if you’re like me, you start thinking about all the what-if’s. In the beginning these what-if’s help you feel like you’re preparing, getting everything under control, being on top of it all and sometimes, this is great! Recently though, I found my what-if’s taking over… and not in a good way. They started to spiral, skewing me into a slump of low energy, overwhelm and despair. How did this amazing opportunity of working with a new collaborator get to this!? And my work day hadn’t even started!
Luckily my thoughts were interrupted by a phone call. My sister called me on the way to work and I filled her in on my misery. She gave me a re-frame taking me out of the “should do”/”need to” mindset and offered “I get to…”.
It felt like holding my wandering minds hand, and taking it down a different path. I get the opportunity to create. I get the opportunity to meet people from all around the world. I get the opportunity to collaborate. All these things that, ultimately, I guess I take for granted. Simple gratitude, something we all talk about, got me back into the present moment, back into optimism and back to my why.
That then helped me find different paths for my what-ifs:
-What if this project is the start of a new collaborative relationship?
-What if it’s a really fun day?
-What if it’s easy and effortless?
-What if we’re all on the same page?
After that call I felt lighter. I had hope again. I was back in my body and less in my head spin.
This week’s class theme is about releasing our gripping, controlling mind and leaning into curiosity, developing trust. What if each day, we re-met ourselves and asked how we’re doing? Asked ourselves, what do we need, to support ourselves into being the people we want to be?
Wether you’re seeing me in class or on set, I am so excited to practice this with you!
